Topics will range from the engineering behind the vehicles to their historical significance to the importance of reaching for the stars.

Saving Oklahoma Film & Video Production!

It failed last year when it was quickly and quietly brought up to a vote to prevent supporters from making their voices heard.

It failed yesterday by three votes.

But today, the Compete with Canada Act (HB 2580) passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives by a vote of 65-28. A Senate version of the bill has already passed. The Film Incentive needs only to get passed reconciliation and get the governor's signature.

What does this mean?

It means we will continue to see great films come to our state and our talented crew base get jobs. It means that the businesses that have sprung up, started by my fellow filmmakers and yours truly, can continue to build our careers and generate economic growth for the state.

I cannot begin to tell you how different things are today in the Oklahoma film and video community as a result of the first film incentive. Making a living ten years ago in this industry was a very difficult task. Today, there are more aspiring filmmakers than I can count. Every time I meet up with industry comrades, I meet several new people.

The ancillary benefits of bringing big movies into the state are just as important! It's allowed people to specialize in various aspects film & video production. Editing, gripping, camera, even rental houses have sprung up in the last ten years. And with more talent and equipment available, video production for local commercials and web videos has exploded. Projects that would see Dallas or other out-of-state filmmakers come to town to make are now going to Oklahomans! Local marketing, advertising, and PR firms are get larger Oklahoma-based companies as clients because they are able to offer high quality video services in state instead of looking elsewhere.

Keeping the film incentive in place gives filmmaker like myself the chance to build off the success of the last ten years. In the near future, I want to start bringing regional and national commercial work into the state. And eventually movies and television series of my own!

The Oklahoma film and video community is a strong and vibrant business and we've only just begun to impact the state's economy! I applaud the Oklahoma State Legislator for getting it right and keeping the incentive. I can't wait to see what our industry looks like ten years from now!

US Foods - Food Fanatics

The 2013 Oklahoma Restaurant Convention & Expo

US Foods in Chicago called up Video405 to help shoot a video for their Oklahoma City based Food Fanatic Chef, Rob Johnson. They needed footage of Rob at the 2013 Oklahoma Restaurant Convention & Expo. Rob conducted 'man-on-the-street' interviews with various US Foods client restauranteurs as well as fellow US Food chefs and reps for their latest product lines.

The biggest challenge on this shoot besides capturing good audio and fighting overhead fluorescent lighting was being surrounded with amazing food. Overall, the footage came out great.

The Air Show - Wiley Post: The World's First Astronaut

Episode 05

In this episode of The Air Show, we take a trip to the Oklahoma HIstory Center to talk about aerospace pioneer, Wiley Post. Yuri Gagarin may have been the first man in space, but that doesn't mean he was the world's first astronaut. Without Wiley Post's contributions to pressure suit technology, manned flights in space wouldn't have been possible.

Wichita Mountain Blues

Oklahoma has mountains, believe it or not...

I finally got the chance to do an overnight stay on a video trip! I actually booked two separate jobs for the Army base at Ft. Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. When they scheduled back to back shoots, I knew I could stay down there and play around in the Wichita Mountains and shoot some footage-something that I've always wanted to do.

The Wichita Mountains aren't big. They've been worn down over many millennia. One of my favorite things about Oklahoma is the varied geography. There are many places that, if someone just dropped you there and asked you to name what state you were in, you wouldn't be able to name where you were. The Wichita Mountains are one of those places. It feels like the idyllic Old West from a Hollywood movie. There are buffalo but they are a bit camera shy. The prairie dogs, who are not camera shy, have their own turnout and you can park right next to them. I didn't get the chance to go that far into the reserve, but I will in a later visit.

The drive up Mount Scott is amazing. There are several turnouts on the way up. The view from the top is a wonderful change of pace from the rolling hills and plains of Central Oklahoma. Again, the rock formations, wild flowers, and cacti make it feel more like the Southwest than the plains.

When you're done exploring the Wichitas, head up to Meers for a hamburger and check out the seismographs. Believe it or not, Oklahoma is seismically active.

Save the Film Exchange

The Legacy of Urban Renewal in Oklahoma City...

Oklahoma City has a unique history unlike any city before it. Springing up overnight after the Land Run, the city quickly grew into a thriving boom town. In the decades that followed, Downtown OKC grew into a bustling city center. But in the late 1960's through to the early 1980's, urban renewal gutted much of downtown of its historic buildings. The downtown core has only recently recovered. Now, one of the buildings that survived urban renewal is under threat again. The Film Exchange building on SW 5th & Robinson is in the footprint of the city's Core 2 Shore plan and the city wants it removed.

But is there a better option? To find out, visit
